For many, October is the height of the spooky season. Cybersecurity is giving many small business owners a fright these days. Did you know that October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month? This special month was established twenty years ago by The President of the United States and the US Congress as a month dedicated to working together to raise awareness about the importance of cybersecurity.
Here are some tips from the National Institute of Standards and Technology to bring more awareness to cybersecurity.
Enable Multi-factor Authentication on all apps that allow it.
Use strong passwords (don’t use actual words; include upper and lower case letters, symbols, etc.)
Use a strong password manager (do not write passwords down on paper or where they can be easily accessed on your computer).
Update your software to the most current versions. Often, a bug or other dangerous item may have been fixed in the latest version.
Recognize and report phishing. Learn how to recognize phishing attempts within your organization. This can be as simple as following some easy guidelines provided on this fact sheet.
