There is no denying that stress is part of the practice of law. Avoidance is not an option when you are doing what you love. What an attorney can do is learn healthy coping strategies and prioritize self-care to manage stress.
Effects of stress are well known: anger, impatience, depression, insomnia, high blood pressure, to name a few. These symptoms do not lead to the quality of life we all deserve. You can reverse these effects with self-care countermeasures. Here are some of those suggestions:
- Deep breathing exercises can fill your lungs with oxygen and force your body into a relaxed state.
- Physical exercise activates our feel-good hormones, endorphins, melatonin, serotonin, and oxytocin. It doesn’t have to be strenuous, either. A simple walk or yoga-style stretch can have many benefits.
- Eating more nutritious foods helps to protect our minds and bodies from stressors. Avoiding alcohol, high levels of caffeine, and processed food will also make you feel better and increase your energy levels.
